Symposium The Art of Gardening

February 1, 2020 – February 8, 2020 all-day
Great Dixter
Northiam nr Rye East Sussex

Our premier horticultural event

Symposia at Great Dixter offer a rare opportunity for gardeners to learn and practise traditional techniques first-hand in the Great Dixter gardens, to discuss aspects of border design and maintenance and to visit other nearby exclusive gardens with Fergus Garrett and the Great Dixter team. Great Dixter has been running annual symposia for nineteen years and many participants return – they know they will receive excellent horticultural tuition, but what they hadn’t realised before their first visit was that they would come to be a part of the Dixter family.

Saturday 1st February – Saturday 8th February 2020 (8 places)

This is a practical Symposium on the subject of pruning and will be demonstrated in the garden as well as the lecture room with time spent working with Fergus and the team on the Great Dixter borders.

Lectures and workshops with head gardener Fergus Garrett:

  • Introduction to Great Dixter
  • Preparing the garden for spring with special emphasis on a wide range of pruning and staking techniques
  • Working within an already established border – dealing with self-sowers and splitting and replanting herbaceous plants
  • Planning, laying out and planting a new border with emphasis on designing with plants from a blank canvas
  • Seed selection and planning for timing of seed sowing for the coming year
  • A detailed insight into the fertilising and composting materials used in the garden as well as materials for tying and staking.

Also includes:

  • An in depth tour of the house with an insight into how garden and house intertwine
  • An exclusive visit to another garden.
  • Supper in the house and at local inns with time for discussion with members of the Great Dixter gardening team.
